Bonjour Madame First Lady!

Should we be surprised that France 's new First Lady is a Supermodel! Non Absolument! Yesterday French President Nicolas Sarkozy married his girlfriend of a few months the devine Carla Bruni. A former face of CHANEL, Bruni's now a successful musician with two (surprisingly excellent) albums under her Chanel chain belt. With a Supermodel in France's White House, Paris is truly the undisputed Fashion Capital of the World.

Canada should really take this as a hint to glam up Ottawa. Perhaps Jessica Stam for Governor General?

[While many reports refer to Bruni as "former Supermodel", Pop Colony believes that being a Supermodel is a lot like being canonized. Once you become a Super you're one for life.]

J'AIME MICHEL GONDRY!

While everyone is patting Cloverfield’s back (and I guess that would be JJ Abrams’ back) for its “innovative” marketing campaign, Michel Gondry shows you what innovation truly is in his meta-trailer for “Be Kind Rewind”.

Gondry’s re-working of the trailer brilliantly ends up being an homage to a movie we haven’t seen yet. Gondry proves that marketing can be more than a series of cheap gags meant to build a thin air of suspense. Marketing can *gasp* be enthusiasm for a superior product. Obviously Gondry loves this movie and wants us to watch it and love it too. Though if you think I’m full of shit go with Emerson who said “Enthusiasm is the mother of effort, and without it nothing great was ever achieved.”

Be Kind Rewind is out February 22 2008

Oh and the oh-so-hot (and ridiculously funny) Paul Dinello is in it. Need I say more?

BONO SAYS -"Irish people are essentially Latin people who don't know how to dance"

Bono said "Irish people are essentially Latin people who don't know how to dance" in an interview with the AP. I seriously effin' hate Bono. Yes even more than before.

That being said us Latinos do know how to move...

The CLOVERFIELD Prequel?

The Inspiration Behind Hud?
[And no, I am not talking about the film with Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas, & Patricia Neal though you should definitely see it anyways.]

Cloverfield-Haiku Review!!!!Shaky camera
Not good when you're hungover

Yet entertaining

Daniel Day-Lewis Brings All the Boys to the Yard

There Will Be Blood is absolutely brilliant. But you don't need me to tell you that since it's on a bajillion critics' lists. Though I must point out this one scene in the movie where you truly get owned by DDL :

BTW: Atonement can bite it.
The best thing it had going for it was A) James MacAvoy & B) the 5 and half minute tracking shot on the shore. But lets face it folks this has become the most overrated movie of the year. In all honesty, I liked Pride & Prejudice better. And not just because it had the always brilliant Tom Hollander. But that does play a large part.

Kylie "X" Why?

So Pop Justice's second take on Kylie's X inspired me to give my two cents CDN with a track by track analysis...1-2 Hearts-At first I hated it. Now I just hate it less.
2-Like a Drug-NO
3-In My Arms-I absolutely hate the chorus! That being said I think the main beat is brilliant. Which is quite the paradox since the premise of a Pop Song is a catchy chorus. So unless Kylie is going post-modern on me I'm going to have to just say "No" to this song. Or at least wait for a killer remix.
4-Speakerphone sounds exactly like Britney's Piece of Me. But what Brit had going for her was the self awareness of the lyrics not the boring as eff beat.
5-Sensitized- This track is actually excellent. It recalls the Kate Bush track Jig of Life off of Hounds of Love album because of it's synth-jig. Which in my book is always a good thing unless you're Imogen Heap.
6-Heart Beat Rock- Kylie doing her best MIA impression or is it Boomkat gone right?
7-The One- Not bad. Not Great.
8-No More Rain- I live in Vancouver so this is basically my mantra but this song just blows.
9-All I See- This song should have gone to Cassie of Me & You fame because it is much too R&B for our girl Kylie to handle effectively. Not to say that Kylie can't handle her Trip-Hop a la Body Language (which was Aces).
10-Stars- Stellar beat.
11-WOW-This song is brilliant! As is the performance of it on The Kylie Show. The best track off X.

12-Nu-di-ty-I swear this song was stolen off of Britney's Blackout rejects. Some brilliant Mashup Maestro must put Nu-di-ty against Brit's Get Naked! I can hear the sweet melodious sounds in my ear already.
13-Cosmic-NO
14-Magnetic Electric- Catchy Euro Pop Bubblegum. There definitely should have been more of these on the album.

The "Didn't make the album but should've" award goes to: Lose Control
It's an Excellent Euro-Pop Song. Which Kylie could've used more of on this album.

Prognosis: Better Luck Next Time!
RX: Kids, Love at First Sight, Red Blooded Woman, Slow

Can The Amazing Spider-Man Sting?

If Spidey's new status quo appeals to Adult Contemporaries then I guess Marvel can consider this a hit..I keep debating whether to read this issue. On the one hand I really do want to see if Peter Parker's return to Singledom is as funny as Caroline in the City. But on the other hand I refuse to pay $4.05 CDN + 12% GST/PST for a standard size comic book from one of the big two. [This is the same morbid curiosity that leads to the monthly dilemma of deciding whether to buy InStyle. But at least that mag can be the size of a phone book from time to time.]

You know I wouldn't leave you without some dessert...

I'm pretty sure VH1 is still playing this.

Comic Books are in Vogue (literally!)

I thought hell would freeze over (or I'd be named Editor-in-Chief) before Vogue would put comic books on their must list. Well in reality they're putting comic book movie adaptations on the list. But hey we got to start somewhere.

Go check out the January issue of Vogue to read the blurb on p.86.

MEX MACHINA-Victor Mancha:Part Man. Part Machine. All CHOLO.

A preview sketch from Humberto Ramos' run on Runaways has surfaced on Ramos' blog.My biggest problem has to be with Victor. Why is he wearing a pair of JNCO jeans from 1994??? And what is up with that greasy non-perfectly styled with Bumble & Bumble hair??? And don't even get me started on the whole open shirt thing. I swear he looks like the HOMIES you buy from the machine at the entrance to Wal-Mart!

But I guess this explains a lot about how Victor becomes Big Bad Victorious in the future.

Zac Efron's Bangs+Lucas Grabeel+Jason Nevins=HSM2 sweeping the GLAAD awards

The High School Musical 2 Non-Stop Dance Party (out this week) was produced by.....wait for it....Jason Nevins!!! Yeah I couldn't believe it either. As soon as I saw his name on the thing the sweet sweet sounds of "Touch Me Like That" came into my mind. So of course I bought the CD.

Also purchased tonight at Best Buy...
A Darren Aronofsky Collection: Requiem for a Dream & πI'm still trying to figure out which one is the bigger trip.

How Did I Miss This?-Not even The Punisher is immune to the Posh Crop!

I was reading Reflections-Creators' Favorites of 2007 over at Comic Book Resources when I came across the cover to issue #48 of The Punisher. I seriously don't know how I overlooked this cover when it came out in August! A Posh look-a-like on the cover of a comic book? And not just any comic book but The Punisher?? Frank Castle's been through a lot but I never thought he'd go for a girl with a Posh crop (See: Katie Holmes, Kimberly Stewart, & Paris Hilton). Poor Frank!
BTW: The Punisher #48 & The W with Posh & Becks both, coincidently, have August 2007 cover dates.

2007:The Year of the Whedon

Why 2007 was definitely
The Year of the Whedon
...

1.“You had me at Canon”

When I first saw the EW article about Season 8 I nearly cried (read:did cry). And since then I’ve been lookng forward to the beginning of each month with as much fervor as those gals seeking paternity tests on Maury. But minus the disappointment of course.

2.Trading Spaces-Joss Whedon vs. Brian K. Vaughan
I’m still not convinced that Joss Whedon and Brian K. Vaughan are two different people. I still believe that this is some sort of Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines (or for you youngins Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana) gimmick. So news that Joss Whedon was taking over writing duties on BKV's Runaways wasn't as surprising as it should have been to me. In all actuality, I still can't even really tell the difference. Joss still makes Molly awesome and does the (his?) pop culture reference thing. Meanwhile over at Buffy, BKV was putting Faith in a ball gown and sending her to jolly old England to take down a Queen B (who btw had horrendous fashion sense) by the name of Gigi. Oh and he made Billie Piper part of canon.

3.The best things in life are free.
(And written by Joss Whedon with art by Fabio Moon.)
Dark Horse Presents via the Dark Horse mySpace page launched at Comic-Con with a bang with the announcement of an all new comic book by Joss Whedon. And I mean really new. As in not related to Buffyverse or Firefly. Yeah my jaw hit the floor too. Not to mention it was going to have art by the ridiculously talented and awesome Fabio Moon. And did I mention they offered it for free? Yes we should all give Dark Horse our first born now.

4.Welcome to the Dollhouse
I swear the announcement of Dollhouse came out of nowhere. At least to me anyways. But any news concerning more Joss & Eliza is always a good thing. The fact that the news came out at the same time that the Faith arc was going on just makes it that much sweeter. And just so you know I’m still not over Tru Calling.

5.Angel in America

Season 5 of Angel is my favorite out of the entire series. Mostly because of “Smile Time”, “The Girl in Question”, the addition of Spike & appearances by Dru, Darla, Andrew, & Adam Baldwin. So the fact that Angel:After the Fall picks up exactly where we left our lawful heroes makes me giddy with joy. That the series is being written by Brian Lynch (whose Spike:Shadow Puppets was one of my fave books of 2007) adds to the giddyness. And those brilliant covers by Tony Harris are just gravy. And I’m from the South where gravy is like Holy Water.

6.The Adventures of Miss Kitty Fantastico
The Last arc of Joss Whedon & John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men began this year and it still is the best X-Men book out there. For instance, who knew that Piotr could be all romantic & stuff? But knowing the Whedonverse as well as I do, I know that Kitty & Piotr getting physical can really only lead to one thing. Death. And since Joss makes no bones about being a Kitty Pryde fanboy I'm thinking that there'll be White Russians served at the wake. But to me the breakout character award for this arc has to go to Cyclops for dropping the emo routine for a bit and being a hero. Though my favorite dialogue still comes from Emma who's channeling Sunnydale's favorite Cheerleader, Cordelia Chase.
The release schedule definitely requires you to repeat the mantra “Good things definitely come to those who wait”. But good things also come to those who buy anything with the names “Joss Whedon” or “John Cassaday” on it.

7.The Office Space
Joss returns to TV!!! Well sort of. Joss directed two episodes of The Office this past year which (good for NBC) actually made me start watching the show regularly again. I seriously don’t know how I abandoned watching John Krasinski weekly. But I digress. But seriously I’m going to use The Secret to get SMG on 30 Rock. She totally needs to be reunited with her Suburban Girl co-star Alec Baldwin and get back to the funny. When will people realize that she’s a fantastic comedic actress??? Oh Sh*t I digressed again. But you guys know I’m right.
Bonus:The Season 3 DVD has an interview with Joss Whedon for fangirl/fanboy enjoyment.

8.“Talk nerdy to me”
The Collector’s Edition of Serenity came out this past fall with an all new commentary by Joss and cast. Joss's commentary is in it of itself supremely entertaining. And , as with all great pop culture, very quotable. Only those who have acquired a working knowledge of Whedon commentaries have truly reached a higher plane of existence.

James Marsters Please Talk POMEy to Me!!!

James Marsters+POMEy Accent=HOT

Here's the preview for Series 2 of Torchwood which starts in January!!!

BTW: If you haven't picked up Angel:After the Fall #2 then do yourself a big favor and pick it up. Do I really need to say more than "THE RETURN OF SPIKE!!!!"??? We're talking about canon people!

*In Search of Christmas Morning*

I was doing some Christmas shopping at my local mall tonight when I came across the best gift ever! Well it's the best gift ever if your friend is a crystal meth head club kid swimming in debt. So if you haven't gotten something yet for that special Barista in your life here's your chance to be the best (smack-talking) friend ever!

From Armani Exchange.com (Naturally!!!)

48 bucks is definitely cheaper than a trip to Ibiza!

And because I can't even make sh*t like this up :
Tiësto's motto is: "I feel the energy from the crowd and I try to give it back, to create a unity."

WTF Jodie???

Even though I'm not a big fan of The Brave One (her Hermes outfitted self in Inside Man is where it's at), I must admit that I rather see Jodie poppin' caps in asses than do this...

The Return of BATMANUEL!!!

Batmanuel is the Mayor of Gotham City!!!Cuban Hottie Nestor Carbonell (TV’s Batmanuel) takes on the role of Mayor of Gotham in The Dark Knight this summer. Finally a Latino not playing a hustler, pimp, junkie, maid, or gardener whose only line is “Mr.Alex iz ah not home”. Props Nestor!!!

Oh Christopher Nolan you so own me!!!

In Sequential Style-Andi Watson & Simon Gane's "Paris"

When I saw the cover to Andi Watson & Simon Gane’s Paris (out now on SLG Publishing) I immediately grabbed it and smiled. Why was I smiling like an idiot in a comic book store? Because there on the cover of a comic book was a woman wearing what closely resembles a Roland Mouret Titanium Dress! I’m such a fangirl for that dress (& Its sister Galaxy) because its geometric shaping gives it a brilliantly futuristic noir (à la Blade Runner) look. Finally a comic book that nicely compliments my copy of ELLE!

Oh and if you’re wondering- the book is an excellent read. It’s quality melodrama. Think along the lines of Douglas Sirk & David Lean and not Lifetime.

Oh why can’t all books be this pretty?

Don't Mess With Texas!!!

Home Sweet Home!

Monday, December 17, 2007

I'll vote for whoever says Emma Frost is their favorite Comic Book Character (at least then they're being honest)

Comix.com recently revealed that Libertarian Republican Presidential Candidate (& Texas Congressman) Ron Paul's favorite comic book character is Baruch Wane, the Berlin Batman, from The Batman Chronicles. Surprised??? You shouldn’t be! A quick Google of “Libertarian Comic Books” (result #5) leads you to an article about Paul Pope posted on the site of Advocates of Self Government. They go on to mention in the article that Berlin Batman's adventure in The Batman Chronicles #11 (Collected earlier this year in the Batman Year 100 TPB) is "one of the great libertarian moments in comics history!".

Oh Ron Paul! You should really give your campaign people a raise because they have excellent Googling skills! Kudos to them for discovering that ridiculously talented comic book (& soon to be fashion designer) guy Paul Pope is a libertarian through a 2004 article & then using that to push your political agenda to the hip graphic novel crowd. Bravo!
Fred Thompson better hit the pedal to the metal and choose big business/alcoholics/"registration" friendly-Iron Man before Giuliani gets to him!

Hey Angelina!-Let my movie roles go!!!

Dear Angelina Jolie,
I’m not going to chastise you for building your own Small World Ride with actual kids. But I feel that I must keep it real with you and ask you to STOP TAKING ALL THE STRONG BLACK WOMEN roles in movies. First you had to go and play your BFF Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heart”. I know you’ve got an Oscar but that doesn’t make you the best person for EVERY part! Even if the Foreign Press seems to think you did a notable job we both know that Thandie Newton (Thandie girl you are so under-appreciated!) would have rocked the socks off that part.
And now you’re playing The Fox in “Wanted”! They’re definitely taking their artistic liberties with the “adaptation” of the comic book but why couldn’t they have kept one of the most kick ass women of color in comics? You know we all would have loved to see Eve be The Fox. For goodness sake the woman has paws tattooed to her chest!!! Could she be any more perfect??? (hint:no!)

Always Right,
Pop Colony

I AM MUSIC VIDEO LEGEND!!!

Francis Lawrence is a freakin GENIUS! No seriously, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be the pop cultured person I am today had it not been for the constant presence of his music videos throughout my adolescence.

Take for instance the effin awesome video for Britney's magnum opus "I'm a Slave 4 U"...

BTW Francis Lawrence thought it was so effin awesome that he did the exact same thing in (my fave movie of 2005) Constantine. I'm pretty sure that in film schools across the world they're teaching wannabe film makers how to properly shoot a scene with fire sprinklers (AKA: The Francis Lawrence Technique ©).

Tuesday's Hotties-The Grand Finale!

The Boys of Bones [FOX 8PM]-Thankfully they don't have eye makeup issues!
David Boreanaz -All I have to say is BECOMING PART 2!!!!

TJ Thyne - His character is a billionaire. Please marry me now!

Eric Millegan - I love my men of the theatre.

Bret Harrison Reaper 9PM CW My favorite new hottie of the TV season! Why oh why wasn't he at the Reaper panel at Comic-Con? Not that I don't love Kevin Smith and all...just not that way. I seriously don't understand why I don't run into the hotties who shoot here in Vancouver ( I'm talking to you James, Aaron, Bret, & Jamie!). Though I did see the awesomely funny Jane Lynch (40 Year Old Virgin, Talladega Nights, & Best in Show) leaving the Armani Exchange on Robson tonight!

Scott Foley The Unit 9PM CBS It's been refreshing to see him a lot less whiny than he was back in his Felicity days. And his appearance in Scream 3 is one of the best performances ever captured on film.

I've stopped watching House because it has just gotten wayyyyy too ridiculous. Sorry Hugh et company!

I love this frakking track!!!-Girls Aloud's Sexy! No No No...

We must hand it to the Brits for their ability to pump out girl groups year after year. It seriously must account for something like 30% of their GDP. Girls Aloud's No No No... is easily my favorite track by a girl group this year. Yeah those new Spice Girl tracks just suck. Is it really so hard to get a good producer these days ? [Hint: The answer is go to Sweden] Ah if only Destiny's Child would get back together! Well as long as if they come with the purveyor of all things brilliant, Darkchild.
