BEST FIRST-TIMER: Bill Nighy [Photo:Variety]
Bill Nighy is pretty much my favorite person ever. I serisouly don't understand why's he's not a household name! Bill Nighy looked smart and polished in a slim suit and his trademark think plastic glasses at his first comic-con ever. Just brilliant!




BEST DRESS(ED): Jamie King [P:Variety]
I have to say that I'm in deep love with that See by Chloe dress [S/S 08]. The dress has a great grapic design print that fits in brilliantly with the whole essence of comic-con: Art!
While some people overdress for SDCC (I'm talking to you Ms.Panettiere!) Jamie manages to perfectly balance a chic yet fun look. Now if only The Spirit trailer were a bit more promising. Not that I'm not loving Sarah Paulson as Ellen and (suprisingly) loving ScarJo's hat collection. Cloche hats are going to rule Fall/Winter!



MOST COMPLIMENTARY: Keanu Reeves & Jennifer Connelly [P:EW]
Down to their dark locks, dark duds, and pale skin, Keanu & Jennifer show that promoting a film is a team effort. They seriously must have discussed what they were going to wear before heading out to SDCC in order to avoid any fashion faux-pas. Not that their good style is anything of a shock. Especially Jennifer "Balenciaga-muse" Connelly.

In Sequential Style-SDCC 2008

While a lot of people like to focus on the Cosplay going on at SDCC (not that I don't love a good Wolverine or Indy) I like to pull a Joan Rivers and judge people's "normal" clothing. Let's see who the big winners are!

BEST IN SHOW: Ray Stevenson [Photo:EW]
Ray seriously brought his A Game from jolly ol' England! I think what really made Ray the cream of the con was that, at least for me, it was totally unexpected. I'm so used to seeing him only as sweaty & dirty Pullo that I was (good) shocked. The man cleans up very nicely.

BEST HAIR: Hugh Jackman [P:EW]
He's seriously ridonculous. But I do have a notorious weakness for the Wolvarine do'.






BEST PSEUDO-COSPLAY: Gerard Way [P:EW]
2008 Eisner winner Gerard Way looks ready and set to re-join The Umbrella Academy (which, thank god, is coming back in November!).







BEST SPIRIT OF COMIC-CON: Rose McGowan [P:EW]
She's wearing a dress that looks like she looted Tinker-Bell's closet yet somehow she makes it work. Rose continues to astonish.



BEST GEEK CHIC: Edgar Wright [P:EW]
As a Spaced-junkie I can actually say that Edgar Wright can do no wrong. Here he's wearing two fanboy staples- a comic tee & jeans but he pulled his look together with a simple cut jacket. The jacket's clean lines really serve to streamline the whole outfit. Yes, I said "outfit". Nerds take notes.

In Sequential Style-James Jean & Prada

I'm not an emotional person but these bags always make me cry tears of pure joy. While the fashionazis are dubbing these bags the "Fairy Bags" [or for you Ren-fest types "Faery Satchels"], I'm going to stay true to comics and christen the bags the "Rose Red" and the "Snow White" in homage to the oh-so-excellent Fables.
And if you're in New York or LA you can go and see the wallpaper James Jean did for the Prada stores in Soho and Beverly Hills. I had somewhat lost faith in Miuccia recently with the move of Miu Miu to Paris fashion week and the the disappearance of übermodel Harry Kinkaid from Prada campaigns. But bringing in James Jean and using his style as inspiration for an entire collection has reinvigorated my faith in Miuccia and Co. If only we could return the ad campaigns to their glory days of Jamie Bell and Maggie Gyllenhaal instead of the tired Sasha, Kirsten Dunst, and Lindsay Lohan of late.

On a side note: If you're wishing to buy my affection/esteem/soul just send me one (or more) of these bags in my direction and we'll see what we can work out.

In Sequential Style-Andi Watson & Simon Gane's "Paris"

When I saw the cover to Andi Watson & Simon Gane’s Paris (out now on SLG Publishing) I immediately grabbed it and smiled. Why was I smiling like an idiot in a comic book store? Because there on the cover of a comic book was a woman wearing what closely resembles a Roland Mouret Titanium Dress! I’m such a fangirl for that dress (& Its sister Galaxy) because its geometric shaping gives it a brilliantly futuristic noir (à la Blade Runner) look. Finally a comic book that nicely compliments my copy of ELLE!

Oh and if you’re wondering- the book is an excellent read. It’s quality melodrama. Think along the lines of Douglas Sirk & David Lean and not Lifetime.

Oh why can’t all books be this pretty?

This is where I take time from my busy life to be a Good Samaritan or " When Pop Colony becomes the Fangirl version of Oprah".

Fanboys it is time for some of you to face a fashion intervention.
Part 1: Take out one of your fave t-shirts and add...

Part 2: Nice Jeans (Quality jeans with a good fit)
• Really it is all about fit. You don’t need Coco Chanel to tell you that fit is everything when it comes to style. That’s why tailors are the superheroes of our world. I bet Topher’s Venom would agree that with great quality comes great fit. Investing in some top quality jeans will really work wonders for your look. I recommend Seven For All Mankind Jeans because they don’t look ridiculous (cough*TRUE RELIGION*cough) and they make your ass look all Mr. Fantastic. (Beware-the comic book puns don't end there!)
• BTW if you have a sour attitude and say something like “I’m not going to pay that much for jeans!” please take the time to realize that you’d gladly spend the same amount on some foil-retailer incentive-pencil sketch-blessed-by-Stan Lee-variant cover of X-Men #122 or some ridiculous Mary Jane statue. Oh and by the way the same place where you would get that rare issue is also a great place to save a lot of money on new jeans. Yes that place is called eBay. Laissez-Faire saves the day again!!!
• Variant 1- James Jeans- For a punny nod to an awesome artist!
• Variant 2- Joe’s Jeans- These just look fantastic. And they have this sort of steampunk-ish quality to them because of their industrial look.
• Variant 3- Diesel. Diesels require a lot more caution during the selection process or you’ll end up looking like Eurotrash. Not that that’s a bad thing. It just won’t work with the rest of the outfit. Plus you might be giving off mixed signals when you go into Ultimate Colossus-friendly neighborhoods. Because you know nobody likes a tease!

Part 3: Adidas Gazelles
• Here’s another investment piece. These sneakers never ever go out of style. They’re simple and classic. And most importantly they go with pretty much everything. They’re like the Kelly bag of sneakers but without the waiting list/promised first born (well unless you’re in Japan where all bets are off!)
• Variant 1: Vans Slip Ons- Another classic sneak that can be as simple (one color) or complex (crazy ass print) as you want them to be.
• Variant 2: I’m hesitant to recommend Chuck Taylors since the emo kids have taken it as their personal mission to really sully their appeal. But if impeccably maintained these sneaks can look super smart. And if you succeed in keeping them clean they really can go with everything- even nice dress pants. (Thanks Club Monaco!)

Part 4: Plain Gap Hoodie
• I endorse the Gap Hoodie mostly because on average it will run you less than one at American Apparel and because you won't have to deal with as many hipsters with androgynous self-christened names like Sky.
• Variant 1: American Apparel- AA carries hoodies in boatloads of colors which is good since variety is the spice of life.
• Variant 2: Old Navy- As long as you stick with the solids you’ll do fine. But do remember it is all about fit.

Civilian Attire-(For those days not spent at Cons or that don't begin with Wednes)
For those days when you want to give yourself an air of mystique substitute your fave Fanboy shirt for a fun & colorful polo shirt or a nice short sleeve button-up in pale pink. Everybody loves some irony!




Note: The reason I’ve aimed this at guys is because I really have seen some crimes against humanity (well at least to my retnas) committed by some Fanboys. But this look is definitely uni-sex. And all of the brand suggestions have both women’s and men’s lines.
